Entrance Slip: Sept 23rd

Building for Change From the Ground Up

Growing up I liked crafting. When I was in elementary, I made rubber band gun out of wood chopsticks and rubber bands that me and my friends would shoots each other. I love building my plastic model figures (which usually require some glue and pieces in its moulds), but I never had to build or make something that I needed in practical sense. I feel like we tend to get creative with what we have to meet our needs at time instead of crafting the object we need (like using bowl instead of mug but not doing pottery).

I am all for having small gardens in school grounds and such because learning about life and witnessing their growth can be a great experience. Also, you can grow some exotic things you cannot usually find in a market.

Backsourcing is interesting idea. It is very relevant because the purpose of backsourcing is to learn crafting something that you are in need of. Also, by doing so you get to learn about the nature of the materials that are being used and how to use them as well as the confidence that was mentioned in the reading. On the other hand you could say it is inefficient because it is always more efficient to mass produce in a factory and to learn a skill that you may use once in few years might be considered waste of time.

Personally speaking, I am a big fan of the idea, because I see value in hands on experience and connecting to the environment we are in, but on the other hand I fear that this could just turn into a exercise of muscle memory.

Exit Slip: Sept 16th

 Garden-Based Learning

Personally speaking, I love idea of having class outside. It does not have to be something fancy or for a very long time, just being outside can be a new environment for students that they can be more engaged. Having read somewhere that students of our target audience have 40 to 50 minutes focus time at max while class itself is well over 60 minutes (also, expecting maximum length of attention is being too optimistic), I think having these kind of exercise outside can serve as a good needed break  that is also relevant for the class as well.

I really did enjoy the sun dial activity because it is more physically involving. We can associate our own behaviour to the concepts we learned, which help us learn, understand and remember for the long time.

Exit Slip: Sept 9th

One of the many thoughts I had while watching the interview was how unorthodox his method of teaching must have been, especially in the time period where content of the lesson is considered to be most important. His example of new activities that was inspired from students forging excuse slips was a cool story but I can also see him being ridiculed by other teachers for doing something that could be considered waste of time.

One comment that resonated with me was on his method in which he made connection between his personal experience with the high school students and the culture. As a teacher, we must be open to new cultures and be understanding even if we might not agree with it. Our opinion on it it must be reflected on our personal experience that students may also learn from it.
